Department Description/Background:

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank Group, supports economic growth by promoting private sector investment in its developing member countries through long-term financing and advisory services. IFC finances projects which are commercially viable and environmentally and socially sound while contributing to sustainable development. IFC’s Environment and Social Development Department (CES) ensures that project design meets World Bank Group requirements. Through its environmental and social review process, IFC offers a wide range of expertise to help clients to identify and solve complex problems, and to find value-added opportunities in their business operations. CES is seeking to recruit a qualified Social Development Specialist to work in IFC’s Beijing office to support IFC’s activities in China and East Asia.

Responsibilities:

Appraise new investments, and supervise portfolio projects, in relation to IFC’s Policy and Performance Standards on Environment and Social Responsibility.

Provide expert social development advice and assistance to private sector clients to achieve positive sustainable development outcomes.

Contribute to the design and delivery of learning programs on sustainability and social risk management for project sponsors as well as for IFC staff.

Develop a network of consultants to assist IFC with Social and Environment reviews and other related initiatives in China.

Assist IFC investment staff with business development and make sure that social issues are addressed early in the process.

Facilitate communication between various stakeholders and promote public consultation and disclosure.

Represent IFC at external events to promote IFC sustainability strategy and leadership.

Qualifications:

Post-graduate degree in the social sciences or related discipline.

5 - 10 years of work experience in social and/or environmental management in the region (preferably in China and with the private sector) including social impact assessments and community development. Although the position relates primarily to social development expertise, preference will be given to applicants who also have environmental assessment skills.

Familiarity with the Safeguard Policies of the World Bank Group, particularly the policies on Involuntary Resettlement and Indigenous Peoples.

Excellent understanding of social and community issues in both a project and regional context.

Good knowledge of relevant sectors in the region.

Excellent communication and presentation skills in Chinese and English

Type of Appointment and Closing Date

This appointment is for an initial 2-year period. World Bank Group staff on regular or open-ended appointments will also be considered, and if selected, the staff will transfer at their current appointment status.
