Senior and Junior Level Fellowships Available
In the Project on Collaborative Industrial Ecology in Asia
at the Yale Center for Industrial Ecology

The Center for Industrial Ecology <www.yale.edu/environment/centers/cie.html> at the Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) seeks applications from junior and senior researchers, policymakers or managers to participate its Collaborative Industrial Ecology in Asia project as visiting fellows. The program, funded with a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation’s Program in Environment and Public Policy, is a multi-year program of educational exchange with Asian institutions to adapt and disseminate the preventative environmental management concepts of industrial ecology.

Yale is a leading center for the emerging field of industrial ecology. F&ES’s Center for Industrial Ecology, headed by Professor Thomas Graedel, houses the prestigious Journal of Industrial Ecology <http://mitpress.mit.edu/JIE>, the International Society for Industrial Ecology <http://www.yale.edu/is4ie> and several major research projects in industrial ecology. This new field studies of the flows of materials and energy in industrial and consumer activities, of the effects of these flows on the environment, and of the influences of economic, political, regulatory, and social factors on the flow, use, and transformation of resources. Industrial ecology encompasses such topics as:

  • material and energy flow studies,

  • dematerialization and decarbonization,

  • technological change and the environment,

  • life-cycle planning, design and management,

  • design for environment,

  • extended producer responsibility,

  • eco-industrial parks,

  • integrated product policy, and

  • eco-efficiency.

Through the Collaborative Industrial Ecology in Asia program, the Yale Center for Industrial Ecology has funds to support both junior and senior level visiting fellows for 3 to 6 months. Applicants from Asia actively involved in industrial ecology or its component topics are urged to apply. The visiting fellow will participate in the research and educational programs of the Center for Industrial Ecology, work on his or her own research and assist the Center in developing a set of case studies on the application of industrial ecology in Asian settings for possible submission to the Journal of Industrial Ecology or for use in forthcoming textbooks.

Applicants for both the senior and junior level fellowship must have a PhD or equivalent training and expertise. Applicants should send a c.v. and letter detailing their background and interests in industrial ecology and their research plans to Irene Ren, project coordinator via email <[email protected]> or fax (+1-203-432-5556). Applications for the upcoming round of fellowships are due on September 30, 2003.
