WWF China Position Announcement |
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is the largest independent non-government conservation organization in the world. WWF operates in 96 countries/regions with over 3000 staff worldwide. WWF provides financial and technical assistance to governments, NGOs, researchers and local communities for activities that protect eco-systems, biodiversity, and sustainable use of natural resources and energy. In China, WWF works in the fields of climate change, sustainable energy, wetlands conservation, forestry, protected areas management, species conservation, environmental education and eco-region management. Title: Ecoregional Coordinator for the Forests of the Upper Yangtze Based in: Beijing or Chengdu Description: WWF has undertaken a global analysis that identified 200 of the world's most outstanding areas in terms of biological diversity and important ecological processes. These Global 200 ecoregions represent the richest of what the world has to offer biologically and are therefore priorities for conservation effort. One of these priority areas is the Forests of the Upper Yangtze (FUY), a swath of forest stretching from Shaanxi's Qinling Mountains in the north through western Sichuan to northwest Yunnan and adjacent areas of eastern Tibet. Best known as the home of the giant panda and golden monkey, FUY is also the most biologically diverse temperate forest on earth, with over half of the plant species found in China. Because of its national and global significance, this ecoregion is the main focus of WWF's forest conservation work in China. WWF's ecoregion conservation initiative in the FUY will work to address both the immediate and root causes of biodiversity loss and ecosystem decline in the ecoregion. To assist in the conservation of this vast area, WWF will collect and analyze relevant information on biological, social, and economic factors that affect the ecoregion and work with partners to develop and implement a strategic plan for the conservation of the Forests of the Upper Yangtze. WWF seeks a Coordinator to help guide this process. The Ecoregional Coordinator will be responsible for the development and implementation of ecoregion conservation plans and projects within the Forests of the Upper Yangtze ecoregion. WWF has worked in the FUY for some time: preliminary biodiversity assessment work has been undertaken, and solid partnerships have been developed in forest planning and policy research. The Coordinator's work will build on this foundation, as well as seeking synergies with other ongoing WWF programmes in the ecoregion, most notably in Giant Panda conservation. An important component of the Coordinator's work is the development and implementation of a forest landscape conservation initiative in the northern Minshan area.
